Staff

Meet our 2019-20 CATS Academy Courier newspaper reporters, photographers, and faculty advisors:

Mia Huynh, Lead Reporter

Mia Huynh, a 12th grader at CATS, has been writing as a reporter for the CATS Academy Courier since her junior year. Through her articles, she hopes you will learn a thing or two about what is going on at CATS Academy Boston and how you can make the most out of your high school years. She looks forward to continuing to report the news this year!

Jennifer Lee, Lead Reporter

Sophomore Jenn Lee has improved as a writer and become more engaged in school activities since joining the Newspaper Club. As an active member of the Community Service Club, Jenn keeps the school up-to-date on all of the Club’s activities–from their charity events to their trips out into the Braintree community–through her writing. Check out her many Community Service Club articles!

DoHa Nguyen, Lead Reporter

It is Le Dong Hai (DoHa) Nguyen’s second year writing for the CATS Academy Courier. In addition to being a reporter for the school newspaper, DoHa is Treasurer of the Student Government, President of CATS Economics Club, and Secretary of Model UN Club. Harboring a deep interest in the social sciences, DoHa loves to indulge in crafting meticulous articles about economics and politics for the school newspaper and his own blog in his free time.

Claire Luong, Reporter

A junior at CATS, Claire Luong is excited to both write and take photographs for the school newspaper this year. Claire tries her best to be herself in her writing–relaxed, chill, and healthy–in hopes that readers will find her newspaper articles genuine and relatable. Also an avid photographer, Claire looks forward to visually capturing important moments and events in the CATS community to share with others.

Maria Eduarda Mottin, Reporter

Sophomore Maria Eduarda Mottin joined the Newspaper Club last year, because she wanted to get more involved, was interested in contributing to the CATS community, and wanted to improve her writing skills. Maria enjoys reporting on CATS events, activities, and trips for the school newspaper. A fun fact about Maria is that she was born in a city called “Christmas,” which is located in the North of Brazil, three days after Christmas (December 27th)!

Alex Shevtsova, Reporter

Alex Shevtsova, a senior at CATS, is excited to start her first full year of writing for the school newspaper! Alex started contributing articles to the paper last year, because she wanted to give journalism a try, hoping it would challenge her writing style and allow her truth to be part of what people are told–and it did. This year, Alex looks forward to writing articles that give helpful insights and tips (such as where to use high-level math that nobody believes is useful or how to find a true hobby) and articles that explore more controversial ideas (such as if Disney Princesses are positive role models for modern girls). Keep an eye out for Alex’s opinion in the CATS Academy Courier this year!

Maya Stoilova, Reporter

Maya Stoilova, a 4-year CATS survivor and book junkie, has been writing for the CATS Academy Courier for two years. She is also a member of Student Government, Literary Magazine, the Scholars Program, and NHS. In her free time, Maya enjoys writing poetry and reading romantic novels like Twilight. Very passionate about writing, Maya has a poetic writing style that makes her newspaper articles stand out in the CATS Academy Courier!

Katie Dang, Reporter

Katie Dang is your source for fashion news at CATS! Katie enjoys attending our school’s fashion events and writing about them. Through her newspaper articles, Katie highlights the importance of the arts at CATS and in life. She is also learning how to report news events, conduct interviews, and improve her public speaking skills. She is excited to continue writing for the CATS Academy Courier in her senior year!

Ana Koniashvili, Photographer & Reporter

Ana Koniashvili, a senior at CATS, brings her many talents to the CATS Academy Courier. She has had both articles and pictures published in the school newspaper. Ana loves working on the paper in many capacities, because it gives her the opportunity to see the school from different perspectives and share her thoughts on school events with other students. She is happiest when she is interviewing people and building relationships with them.

Norah Laoui, Photographer

Senior Norah Laoui joins our newspaper team as a photographer. Because Norah enjoyed helping out with last year’s newspaper, contributing both articles and pictures, she decided to take on a larger photography role with the school newspaper this year and continue providing photos for news articles. Norah likes taking photos, because she believes that photos can give people a glimpse into someone else’s life or an event they could not attend. Check out Norah’s amazing photography skills in the CATS Academy Courier this year!

Brenda Bowen, Faculty Advisor

Brenda Bowen is a Social Sciences teacher at CATS Academy with professional certifications in history, special education, and school administration. Since coming to CATS in 2016, she has enjoyed teaching AP World History, Introduction to Law, Honors, US History and Professional Communications.  She also co-founded of the school newspaper, the CATS Academy Courier.

Prior to coming to CATS Academy, Brenda practiced law in Massachusetts for more than 20 years in a private practice which focused on the areas of disability law and general litigation. She received her B.A. in Economics from Bucknell University and her J.D. from Suffolk University Law School. Her teaching and school administration certifications are from Bridgewater University.

Danielle Brown, Faculty Advisor

Danielle Brown has been the co-advisor of the Newspaper Club for two years. Also an English Literature teacher at CATS, she enjoys helping students apply their reading and writing skills to tasks (like newspaper article writing) that transcend the classroom and reach a real-world audience. As the creator of the new CATS Academy Courier website, Danielle is excited for the paper’s digital footprint to grow this year and beyond so students’ work can reach an even larger audience!
